Just about done with all of this. I really enjoyed my placement at Baldwin and enjoyed the students I had. My last two engagements used materials from Janet Allen's More Tools for Teaching Content Literacy. I did one enagagement over using plants for medicine and the other was over the recent oil spill in the Barrier Reef. I wanted to use strategies that would allow students to show what they knew prior to the article and then find out what they learned from the articles. The students really took to the activities and they went well. I'm not going to go into detail about these, I can do that in class if I need to.
Still working on TWS, GSTEP, AR, and Reading. Some of the things in TWS have really helped me in teaching while some of the other stuff......This has been a great experience and I feel much more prepared for teaching now.

How well did your students react to implementing current events into your classes? From talking to other teachers who use these constantly, I have found out that it often become more of a time-using exercise than an actual benefit. The first few current events turn out well, but after the students get used to what is going on, the effort level begins to drop. Just curious if you saw this or not...
ReplyDeletePaul,
ReplyDeleteBaldwin was an experience to say the least. I am glad to hear that your literacy engagements went so well. I agree with Ross in the idea that most current events take a drastic plummet in interest level after the first couple. However, exercising the students prior knowledge and post opinions is an interesting twist to the regular current event activities.
Congratulations on your completion of GSTEP and TWS...you make me sick with jealousy.
We will always have the big win over the seniors. Nobody can take that away from us.
